The rules in Canada

Scaffold rules,
province by province

Occupational health and safety is provincial, and the scaffold rules differ from one province to the next. These are the three provinces we’ve read in full.

  • Alberta: tag every entry, re-tag every 21 days

OHS Code s.326 requires a colour-coded tag at each point of entry showing the duty rating, last inspection date, inspector, precautions and expiry. Site-built scaffolds are re-inspected at least every 21 calendar days.

    Alberta OHS Code, Part 23
  • Ontario: engineered scaffolds need a written statement

Over 15 metres above the base support (10 metres for tube and clamp), a scaffold must be engineer-designed and inspected before use, and the inspector must state in writing whether it matches the drawings. Both stay at the project.

    Ontario Regulation 213/91, section 130
  • British Columbia: inspect before every shift

Part 13 requires a work platform and its components to be inspected before use on each shift and after any modification. It specifies no tag and no written record.

    WorkSafeBC OHS Regulation, Part 13
  • CSA Z797 applies only where adopted

CSA Z797 binds only where a province adopts it, and provinces do so inconsistently. Citing it as a national Canadian requirement isn’t accurate.

    Scaffold tag requirements, with sources

Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Quebec and the Atlantic provinces publish their own instruments and aren’t covered here. Check the rules that apply where you work. This page is general information, not legal advice.

  • T&M ticketsExtra work recorded on site, signed by the customer on the phone and emailed as a PDF. Scafflinq calls them day dockets.

  • Incident reportsGuided questions, witnesses, up to 10 photos and a signature, emailed as a PDF to your client and supervisor.
  • Your own duty ratingsSet up the duty categories you work to, such as CSA Z797’s light, medium and heavy duty, in the web portal.
  • Maya AI assistantSpeak your inspection notes and Maya suggests checklist answers. The inspector reviews every one and signs off.

The terms
you use on site

T&M ticket
Scafflinq calls it a day docket. It records the time and materials for extra work, and the signed PDF is emailed before you leave site.
Tailgate meeting
Scafflinq calls it a toolbox talk. It records the briefing before work starts, the talk points and every attendee’s signature.
Scaffold tag
In Alberta the colour-coded tag is mandatory. Our free Alberta tag generator works out the 21-day expiry for you.
